Hazel hurdles are a natural and practical fencing solution that offers a seamless integration into your outdoor landscape. Manufacturers craft hazel hurdles from the branches of the hazel tree, a species native to Europe and western Asia. You can use them in a many designs, from sectioning off parts of your land to defining your garden boundaries.
The branches used to make hazel hurdle panels are typically harvested from coppiced hazel trees. In coppicing, foresters periodically cut trees back to ground level to promote new growth, following a traditional forestry technique. This sustainable practice ensures a steady supply of straight, flexible branches ideal for weaving.
These panels are traditionally made using a technique known as wattle weaving, branches are woven together to create a sturdy structure. The panels main strength comes from the interwoven branches. Securing the woven branches further with galvanised fixings creates a secure and durable design.
You can attach the panels to timber posts in a variety of ways. Machined round timber posts are the most popular choice for supporting the panels, attached using zip ties or smaller screws.
Hazel Hurdle panels require minimal maintenance due to their makeup. Overtime branches may loosen due to natural wear and tear, reattaching to the panel will solve this issue. Applying protective coatings to the timber can also increase longevity.
Choose Hazel Hurdles if you are looking for a charming and environmentally friendly way to define boundaries or add privacy to outdoor spaces.
